International SEO is one of those areas a lot of bloggers have questions about, because it’s not something you typically deal with until you need to. It’s not difficult, but there are things to keep in mind. I’d like to cover 7 tips to remember when trying to improve rankings in international search engines.
International SEO is one of those areas a lot of bloggers have questions about, because it’s not something you typically deal with until you need to. It’s not difficult, but there are things to keep in mind. I’d like to cover 7 tips to remember when trying to improve rankings in international search engines.
1) Your Country TLD Matters
The country assigned to your TLD (top level domain) has a significant impact on your ability to rank in a specific country’s search engine. Some TLDs are country neutral, such as .net and .com, but domains such as .ca and .co.uk are given preference in their respective countries.
2) Location of Your Servers
Search engines are able to determine the location of your website’s hosting server. If your server is location in Germany, you may have a harder time ranking in Japan. One tactic for targeting a specific country is to acquire hosting in that country.
If you’re setting up sections of your site with either folders or subdomains, you can use Google Webmaster tools to set geotargeting. Susan Moskwa at Google has put together a great video on geotargeting over at Webmaster Tools.
4) Country Specific Link Building
If you’re looking to rank in a specific country, it’s important to build country specific link authority by receiving links from sites associated with that country.
I recommend using domain extension with the site: search to find link building opportunities.
For example, “directory site:co.uk” will help you find directories in the UK.
You can also use the &gl=xx parameter in Google to search as if you were in that country. For example, gl=de would show results as if you were in Germany.
5) Use the Native Language
It seems like almost a no-brainer, but I recommend having your content written in the language native to the country you’re targeting.
6) Use Accents In Content, But Not URLs
I recommend using character accents in the site’s copy and page title, but not in the URL. When a URL gets encoded, it will come messy and illegible. This is bad for usability and SEO.
7) Use Your Address
If your website has an address in the country you’re targeting, include it in the footer of every page. This will help search engines assign a physical address to the site.
